A Florida bill has revoked Disney World’s self governance by eliminating the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special district that gave the company the right to issue bonds, assess taxes, enforce its own safety codes and build just about anything. The Florida lawmakers’ actions have sparked discussion about other miniature jurisdictions known as micronations.
A micronation claims to be a sovereign country but is not officially recognized by other governments or major international organizations.
The Republic of Molossia in Nevada has its own flag. Talossa, in Milwaukee, purportedly has its own currency. The mayor of North Dumpling Island, off the coast of Connecticut, claims the island is energy independent.
