Reuters has exclusively reported that local and federal officials in Houston are looking for nearly a dozen unaccompanied migrant children who have gone missing. Earlier this summer, Houston police alerted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about a trend in migrant children going missing from the homes of their sponsors.

Last month, the HHS conducted an emergency review of migrant children missing after being placed with sponsors in the Houston area. HHS found that since late last year, 57 kids had gone missing. As of last week, 46 of them had been confirmed safe. Authorities said they have not found any evidence of sex or labor trafficking. More than 200,000 non-Mexican minors have been caught crossing the border alone since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.
