New details have been released in the quadruple homicide of four University of Idaho students, and the probable cause affidavit has been released. This story and more highlight the midday rundown for Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023.

Court documents reveal Idaho murder details

Breaking new details revealed DNA evidence was left on the button of a knife sheath that was found at the crime scene according to police. Police say that the DNA belongs to Bryan Kohberger.

The affidavit also reveals a surviving roommate’s encounter with the killer. The roommate reportedly heard crying then a male voice saying “It’s okay I’m going to help you.”

That roommate saw a man in black clothing wearing a mask that covered his nose and mouth. The man walked toward her, then past her, as she remained in what police call a phase of frozen shock. The affidavit gives just a slight glimpse into the night of the murders. This is a major development to a crime the nation desperately has wanted answers to.

Michigan senator won’t run in 2024

As Kevin McCarthy faces growing pressure to end the stalemate over his bid for speaker of the House, there is a new announcement coming from the other chamber of Congress.

A key member of the Democratic leadership, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow has announced she will not run for a fifth term in 2024. The move opens up a seat in a key battleground state. The news also likely comes as a shock to many Democrats.

Stabenow’s announcement could turn Michigan’s Senate race into one of the most competitive in the country.

Car sales in 2022 hit a decade low

If you’ve searched to buy a car within the past year, this next story is probably not shocking. Auto dealers have had empty car lots, but not because they’re selling so many cars. It’s because of a car shortage that has caused sales to stumble.

The auto industry woes have ultimately led to the worst year of car sales spanning more than a decade.

There’s been a lot going on in the industry. There’s been a drag in chip shortage, a hike in interest rates and a stall of overseas auto parts because of the war in Ukraine. The numbers show for these factors.

The U.S. sold 13.7 million cars in 2022. That’s the lowest figure since 2011, and an 8% decrease year-over-year. Some automakers lost as much as a quarter of typical sales. But the industry is expecting a rebound for 2023.

Damar Hamlin making progress

Damar Hamlin is neurologically intact, his lungs are healing, and he continues to make progress. That’s according to the Buffalo Bills organization which gave an update on Damar Thursday morning.

While Hamlin remains in critical condition, it was positive news to hear for a nation praying he pulls through.

Hamlin collapsed from cardiac arrest during Monday night’s football game.

ChatGPT banned in NYC schools

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm as artificial intelligence that can write full essays, solve high level math problems and take tests. These reasons are exactly why New York City is saying “no way” to ChatGPT.

New York City schools have disabled the chatbot from being accessed on all school networks and devices. They worry students could easily use it to cheat on assignments and negatively impact a student’s ability to learn if the answers are just automatically given to them.

It’s not just New York City looking to stop ChatGPT from being used to cheat. A Princeton student now claims to have built counter intelligence software that can detect whether a chatbot has been used to plagiarize work.

So cheaters, beware.

IT’S NOT JUST NEW YORK CITY LOOKING TO STOP CHATGPT FROM BEING USED TO CHEAT.

A PRINCETON STUDENT NOW CLAIMS TO HAVE BUILT COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE SOFTWARE THAT CAN DETECT WHETHER A CHAT-BOT HAS BEEN USED TO PLAGIARIZE WORK.
