Pizza Hut announced Friday it broke the Guinness World Record for world’s largest pizza. The popular pizza chain constructed a pizza with a surface area of 13,990 square feet Wednesday. That topped the previous record of 13,580 square feet set by a group of Italian chefs in 2012.

“You know, Pizza Hut has a history of making firsts,” Pizza Hut President David Graves said Wednesday. “We were the first to deliver a pizza. We’re the first to take an order over the Internet. We’ve always done big, exciting things. And so, breaking the world record for the world’s largest pizza just felt like the right thing to do.”

To make the pizza, rectangular slices of dough were laid along the base of the pizza. Pizza sauce was then painted on to the dough before the cheese and pepperoni were added. The estimated of amount of each ingredient used were as follows:

• 13,653 pounds of dough
• 4,948 pounds of pizza sauce
• 8,800 pounds of cheese
• 630,496 pieces of pepperoni

“The planning has been going on for a while,” Graves said. “I mean, for multiple months we’ve been planning how to do it.”

Pizza Hut fully assembled, topped and baked the world’s largest pizza in pieces on-site at the Los Angeles Convention Center. After it was certified, the pizza was divided into more than 68,000 individual slices.

“The great thing is none of it’s going to waste,” Graves said. “We can actually donate it to some local food banks here in the Los Angeles community. So, we’re really excited about that.”

Pizza Hut already holds the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude pizza delivery on land. The pizza was delivered 19,341 feet to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania back in 2016.
