As the war in Ukraine continues, European and U.S. officials have expressed concerns that Russia may resort to the use of chemical weapons. Western officials and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have warned that Putin could deploy chemical agents.

“The world must react now,” Zelenskyy said.

Officials said they are investigating an unconfirmed claim by a far-right Ukrainian regiment that a poisonous substance was dropped in the besieged city of Mariupol this week. The claim could not be confirmed by independent sources, and Ukrainian officials said it could have been phosphorus munitions, which cause horrendous burns but are not classified as chemical weapons.

The Organization for Prevention of Chemical Weapons said in a statement Tuesday that it is concerned over the “unconfirmed reports of chemical weapons” and that it is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and stands ready to assist in an investigation.

THE WAR IN UKRAINE HAS TAKEN A TURN – RUSSIA IS HAVING A HARD TIME GAINING GROUND IN THE INVASION.

AND NOW THERE ARE NEW CONCERNS

“POSSIBLY USING CHEMICAL WEAPONS IN UKRAINE”

“GROWING CONCERNS OF A CHEMICAL AGENT”

“CHEMICAL WEAPONS”

SO WHAT ARE CHEMICAL WEAPONS?

CHEMICAL WEAPONS ARE TOXIC SUBSTANCES THAT ATTACK THE SKIN, BLOOD, NERVES OR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

THEY’RE DESIGNED TO KILL AND INFLICT AGONIZING PAIN – INDISCRIMINATELY. ON LARGE POPULATIONS.

THAT’S WHAT MAKES THEM COST-EFFECTIVE

BUT THIS TYPE OF WARFARE HAS BEEN A RED LINE FOR THE U.S. – THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DEMANDED MILITARY ACTION IN SYRIA AFTER THE GOVERNMENT ATTACKED ITS OWN PEOPLE WITH CHEMICAL WEAPONS BACK IN 2013

4 YEARS LATER THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHED STRIKES ON A SYRIAN AIRBASE AFTER IMAGES OF CIVILIANS GASPING FOR AIR DREW WORLDWIDE OUTRAGE

IMAGES LIKE THESE ARE WHY THE UN CLASSIFIED CHEMICAL WEAPONS AS WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

AND IT’S WHY CHEMICAL WARFARE IS ILLEGAL UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAW
