VIDEO: Scary scene as Russian school shooting leaves 6 dead, 28 hurt

According to officials in Russia, a gunman killed six people and injured 28 at a university campus Monday. The video above shows the scene of the shooting as police were investigating.

The Russian Health Ministry said 19 of the 28 injured were shot. It wasn’t immediately clear how the others were injured.

The school shooting happened at Perm State University, about 700 miles east of Moscow. University officials said about 3,000 people were on the campus at the time of the shooting.

Students and staff locked themselves in rooms. Some videos show students jumping out of second-story windows. That could be what caused the non-gunshot related injuries.

A traffic police unit was the first to reach the scene. “I entered the building and saw an armed young man walking down the stairs,” Officer Konstantin Kalinin said in an Interior Ministry video. “I shouted at him ‘Drop it!’ That’s when he pointed the gun at me and fired. At that point I used my gun.”

The school shooting suspect was wounded when police returned fire. “The suspect has already been identified. He was wounded while being detained because of resistance, and then he was brought to a medical facility,” Russian Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said. “The investigation is collecting profiling materials on the suspect. It is found that the suspect purchased a smoothbore hunting gun, which he was firing, in May this year.”

The shooter has not been identified, nor has a motive been determined.

The Perm attack was the third Russian school shooting in recent years. Back in May, a gunman opened fire at a school in the city of Kazan, killing seven students and two teachers with a registered weapon. After the shooting, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the national guard to tighten gun regulations. Russia then passed a law raising the minimum purchase age from 18 to 21.

President Putin commented on Monday’s school shooting during a meeting with the country’s Central Election Committee. “This is a huge disaster,” Putin said. “And not just for the families who have lost their children, but for the country as a whole.”
